大洋洲的定义
大洋洲，世界面积最小的洲，占全球总陆地面积的6%[10]，是位于南半球的一个大洲。主要分为两部分：澳大利亚大陆与太平洋各岛屿。[11]大洋洲面积约为8,525,989平方公里（3,291,903平方英里）[12]，人口约为35,670,000人，是世界人口第二少的洲，仅次于南极洲。[13]包括美国在内的一些国家并不承认大洋洲为一个洲，认为在地质学上，澳大利亚大陆是一个独立的洲──澳大利亚 （Australia）。[14][15]
大洋洲包括了印度尼西亚的巴布亚地区（巴布亚省与西巴布亚省）、巴布亚新几内亚、澳大利亚、新西兰及南太平洋的岛国。[16]巴布亚新几内亚是唯一一个与别国有陆地疆界的大洋洲国家，与亚洲国家印度尼西亚接壤。
大洋洲和亚洲之间的边界至今还没有统一的定义。在地理角度上，整个新几内亚岛皆位于印度-澳大利亚板块内[17]，因此新几内亚岛和印尼其他岛屿之间的海域是大洋洲和亚洲之间的边界。[18]在政治角度上，印度尼西亚是一个亚洲国家，而巴布亚新几内亚则是一个大洋洲国家，故大洋洲和亚洲之间的边界为印度尼西亚与巴布亚新几内亚之间的国界。[19]在生物地理学角度上，马来群岛与大洋洲的生态是以华莱士线划分，故故大洋洲和亚洲之间的边界为华莱士线本身。[20][21]在文化角度上，大洋洲文化圈主要覆盖美拉尼西亚、密克罗尼西亚群岛、波利尼西亚、澳大利亚与新西兰，因此大洋洲和亚洲之间的边界是以美拉尼西亚西北方与马来群岛接壤之地划分。[22]一小部分人甚至会将马来群岛并入大洋洲中。[23][24]如果把马来群岛划入大洋洲的话，那么马来西亚、新加坡、文莱、印尼、菲律宾和东帝汶均会成为大洋洲国家，而大洋洲和亚洲之间的边界则会以马六甲海峡和南中国海划分。
有不少大洋洲地区虽然位于大洋洲内，但在文化、历史及政治方面均与其他洲有较大的联系。例如属于南美洲国家智利的复活节岛[25]；属于北美洲国家美国的夏威夷[26]；属于亚洲国家日本的小笠原群岛、南鸟岛、冲鸟礁、火山列岛[27]等。
